ECO- UBUNTU SPORTS DAY

The first edition of Eco-Ubuntu Sports Day for Salesians schools have concluded. Eco-Ubuntu is a project by Africa Meridionale (AFM), Salesian Planning and Development Office (SPDO). Its purpose is to address the effect of climate change by creating “Green Centres” and empowerment/strengthening of local communities in Southern Africa for the improvement of environmental and climate protection.

Sports and cultural activities are both strong recommendations for gathering people for context sharing. It is for that reason Eco-Ubuntu gathered Salesians schools in hope of raising awareness on environmental issues that results to climate change, and to also propagate solutions or means in solving those environmental issues.

The day was first celebrated by Sigcineni and Gebeni Catholic Primary School (5 June 2024) on a one day tournament, Sigcineni being the host. Manzini Youth Care, Eco-Ubuntu team and community members around the school presented themselves and took part in the games. The day was accompanied by a number of sporting and cultural activities such as soccer, netball, tug of war game, Ummiso, Sibhaca, drama and poetry. In addition, students from both schools acknowledged Eco-Ubuntu by composing songs extending their deep appreciation for making the day possible and also thanking them for what they are doing in ensuring sustainability within Salesians Schools.

Then, later that week (7 June 2024), the rest of the Salesians Schools in the Manzini region gathered at St John Bosco High School (Malkerns) to celebrate the day, which marked the end of the first edition. It was a day of enjoyment and cheerfulness. For all competitions in both tournaments, winners were presented with trophies. On these day, four schools battled in four activities which is soccer, netball, volleyball and basketball. Schools that participated on this day were Salesians High School, Bosco Study Centre, St Bosco High and St Anne’s High School.

Lastly, the first edition was a huge success with students and teachers from all schools showing great interest and commitment to the games. The massage was sent, and the purpose was served.
