Manzini Youth Care homes
Manzini Youth Care is a Faith based Organization founded by the Salesian Society of Catholic Priests and Brothers in 1978.Its mission is to provide a holistic approach to education, development and human formation and basic needs to marginalized young people based on Christian values. The organization assists vulnerable children and youth. Education and skills training are the priority areas, with a focus on reintegration back into society, and or back into mainstream education, and or into jobs when they have completed their training. Accommodation is provided to those that are from the streets, abusive backgrounds and child headed families. Training varies from more advanced training to training for those youth with little or no education. Life skills are an integral part of the programs.
Target Group
The main target is the youth at risk.
MYC description ‘Youth at Risk’– It is a young person who is in an environment that does not support transitioning successfully into adulthood. Success can include academic success and job readiness as well as the ability to be financially independent.

About MYC recruitment

Manzini Youth Care has five homes in total but due to unfoseen ramifications there’s only one home active which is the boys home at Enjabulweni. The operation of the other four homes came to a halt but that does not mean they don’t exist.
Criteria for Recruiting at Manzini Youth Care
The Goal and Objective
The goal of recruitment is to give hope to the youth at risk and their families by providing these young people with basic needs. The objective is to rehabilitate the youth at risk with interpersonal development skills through education, providing medical care, building their self-esteem, providing shelter through our care homes and also food. After having recruiting them we equip them with psychosocial skills that will enable them to live responsibly in their communities after being reintegrated.
Manzini Youth Care recruits children with:
- Current or past experience of abuse or family violence.
- Parents who are abusing alcohol, taking drugs or gambling.
- Guardians who have difficulty with parenting.
- Children who have been neglected.
- Home structure that is not conducive for children to live in. For example, when there are too many people who are sleeping in a one room flat.
- No tuition money and they are currently not schooling.
Criteria for the Youth at Risk
During the recruitment process the MYC Social Welfare team prepares the young person for a placement at Don Bosco home and also accepts that he will be living with new people in a different environment.
Age of the Youth – The young person should be between the ages 14 and 18 in order to be recruited to the MYC care home.
Education – The child must have been to school before. He must also have academic records such as school reports.
Community – Community leaders must be notified about the recruitment of the youth in their community.
The Homestead
During the recruitment process MYC social workers assess the homestead to ascertain whether it is a safe place for the young person to live in or not. The following criteria are used to check whether the child deserves to be recruited to the Don Bosco care homes or not:
Home – If the home has no adequate food, sleeping material, clothes and separation between the rooms for parents and children the child is can be recruited. A sense of belonging is important.
Environment – If the environment is harmful to the child and there are cases of abuse.
The recruitment is successful when the child has been registered at the Department of Social Welfare (Deputy Prime Minister’s Office).The child needs to be provided with clean clothes , a balanced meal and also needs to be registered at a school.
Services
Shelter
MYC provide shelter to all the children in these homes. Beds and blankets are being provided, this is done to adhare to our mandate which is providing all needs to our children.
Education
From the time of requitment its always uporn Manzini Youth Care to provide quality education to all children kept within its homes.So, the provision of formal and informal education is always seen as a priority at MYC.
Food
Manzini Youth Care's number one responsibility is providing food and love to the youth. We provide healty and proper food to all our homes for the children to propel and ensue all their different daily activities.
Life Skills
Uporn completion your formal education as an MYC child, you are then given a chance choose any life skill activity of your choice from within the training center that MYC has, this chance is given to those who had not done well in Form5.
Enjabulweni home
The former MITC premises at Enjabulweni were converted to a reception centre for street children, providing food and shelter, in the hope of gradually rehabilitating them. However, the reception centre concept rapidly evolved into a third residential home called Enjabulweni, for those boys who could not return to a family situation.
