THE REVIVAL OF MYC SPORTS

It’s a huge celebration to Manzini Youth Care (MYC) staff and Bosco Study Centre pupils following an announcement by the administration that sports are resuming. For the past few years, the mighty organization has not been fully participating in sporting activities due to unforeseen solemn circumstances, so, the revitalization of MYC sports is indeed victory. The organization will be competing with different local Catholic schools (Manzini region) under the Eco-Ubuntu sports competition. The sheer purpose of this competition is to educate, promote and propagate practicable means instigated for the improvement of environmental and climate protection through implementation of the Eco-Ubuntu project.

Bosco Study Centre will be competing in activities such as soccer, netball, tennis and basketball. For MYC, this is a huge opportunity to revive their sports not only for the upcoming Eco-Ubuntu competition, but also for other local competitions. Since the organization is known to be extremely competitive and industrious in almost all sporting activities associated with, many believe that such historic record will be rekindled and restored.

Another entertainment group making a big mellow return is the MYC Marimba group. MYC Marimba band was formed in 2010 as an extra curriculum activity under mentorship skills which aims to reveal hidden talents and give young people a chance to work on those skills till they reach its peak. Predominantly, the artistic nature of MYC Marimba bend dwells on pure Swazi culture (attire and stories). The melodic sounds emanate from wooden bars that are stuck by mallets. Below each bar is a resonator pipe that amplifies particular harmonies of its sound.

In recent years, the MYC Marimba band had performed in bean feast and in various traditional occasions such as Umtsimba. They have also shared the stage with big artists, traditional and non-traditional groups (Sisonke group) in events such as EEC and MTN road shows. Interestingly, they have also been to Spain to perform in one of the country’s finest events. In order to maintain the rhythm and style of the band, the older or former members of the group teach and give the youngsters techniques on how to excel and prolong the band’s existence.
